Among the state of Illinois’ estimated 2.4 million owners of targeted semi-auto rifles, pistols and shotguns, less than 30,000 have complied by the December 31 deadline.
There’s a looming showdown over gun rights in Illinois and, right now, the people are winning. The state is suffering an embarrassing setback in its drive to disarm law-abiding citizens in Illinois.
The state of Illinois has a new law that went into effect last year, banning so-called “assault weapons.” The law, signed in January 2023 by Democrat Gov. J.B. Pritzker (pictured above), gave residents until December 31, 2023, to comply. Either they turn in their AR-15s and 170 other banned guns and magazines by that date or they must register them with the state. Even a sem-auto pistol that holds more than 10 rounds is classified under the new law as an assault weapon and no longer legal.
Well, the deadline of December 31 came and went and only 29,357 people have registered their weapons — out of an estimated 2.4 million gun owners in the state. That’s a paltry 1.2 percent who decided they were going to be obedient to the rogue state of Illinois, which decided to run roughshod over the Second Amendment rights of its citizens.
So, is the state going to start rounding up all those people and confiscating their guns?
